What causes snoring?
Snoring is the noise made by the vibrations of soft tissues in the throat when breathing during sleep. One of the main causes of snoring is the partial collapse of the oropharynx and hypopharynx. These are the tissues at the back of the throat, which are prone to slacken as we get older, carry excess weight or drink alcohol. During sleep these tissues relax even more and vibrations created by natural breathing through the airways can cause the noise of snoring.
During waking hours muscle tone keeps the airways in good shape - that is why we do not snore when we are wake.
The following factors and conditions are known to increase snoring:-
-
Weight - if you are overweight the throat tissues can be less firm and more inclined to vibrate when breathing
-
Smoking - smoke irritates the throat and can inhibit smooth airflow
-
Taking certain medicines and alcohol consumption, especially before bedtime, can increase snoring by causing extreme relaxation of the muscles
-
Sleeping on the back can narrow the airway and partly block airflow, so try sleeping on your side instead
-
Nasal congestion due to a cold, allergies or deviated septum can limit airflow through the nose which forces you to breathe through the mouth
-
Other physical conditions such as a longer than normal uvula, a thick soft palate, a poorly positioned jaw or enlarged tonsils can narrow the airway and cause snoring
